# FAQ

> Common questions about Squads

Answers to common questions about Squads. For feature-specific questions, check the relevant page in the [App Guide](/app-guide/transactions/how-transactions-work).

## General

<Accordion title="What is a Squad?">
  A Squad is a multisig account on Solana that requires multiple members to approve transactions before they execute. Teams use Squads to manage treasuries, programs, tokens, and validators with shared custody. [Learn how Squads works](/getting-started/how-squads-works).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Which blockchain is Squads built on?">
  Squads is built on Solana.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="How is Squads different from Altitude?">
  Squads and [Altitude](https://altitude.xyz/) are both built by Squads Labs for different users and use cases.

  **Squads** is a multisig platform on Solana for technical teams managing programs, executing trades, and controlling Solana tokens.

  **Altitude** is a business account for CFOs and finance teams. It's a stablecoin-powered account where businesses earn rewards, make payments (ACH, wire, SEPA, SWIFT), manage bills and invoices, and run daily financial operations. Balances are held as USDC and EURC on Solana, but the blockchain is completely abstracted from the user.

  Squads is Solana-specific. Altitude is for any team operating with stablecoins or looking to optimize their financial operations.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Is Squads permissionless?">
  Yes. Anyone can create a Squad and start using it without requiring approval.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Is Squads open source?">
  Yes. Squads Protocol is [open source](https://github.com/Squads-Protocol/v4). For questions, reach out on [Discord](https://discord.com/invite/squadsprotocol).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="What's the difference between V3 and V4?">
  Squads runs on Squads Protocol V4 (launched 2023), which is the current recommended version used by the majority of teams. V3 (launched 2022) is the legacy version with a separate frontend, still used by some teams. New Squads are created on V4.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="How much does Squads cost?">
  Squads offers two plans: Basic and Pro. The Basic plan includes core multisig functionality for a one-time 0.1 SOL deployment fee. Pro adds features like sub-accounts, spending limits, and the Token Manager. To get Pro, select **Request access** on the **Subscription** page. [See pricing details](/getting-started/pricing).
</Accordion>

## Security

<Accordion title="How do I know Squads is secure?">
  Squads Protocol V4 has undergone ten independent [security audits](/security/audits) by four firms and has been [formally verified](/security/formal-verification) by two independent firms. The protocol has been immutable since November 2024, meaning the audited code is exactly what runs onchain and can never be modified.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Who has access to my funds?">
  Only your Squad's members. Squads Labs has no control over your assets. All funds are held in onchain accounts controlled by the Squads Protocol program, which enforces your multisig threshold. Only members who meet the approval threshold can authorize transactions.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="What happens if the Squads app goes down?">
  Your assets remain secure onchain. If the UI becomes inaccessible, you can interact with the Squads Protocol program directly via the [SDK or CLI](/security/backup).
</Accordion>

## Access and wallets

<Accordion title="I created a Squad but can't find its private key. Where is it?">
  Squads don't have private keys. A Squad is a **PDA** (Program Derived Address), an address controlled by the Squads Protocol program rather than a private key. The program enforces your multisig threshold to authorize transactions. See [Solana's PDA documentation](https://solana.com/docs/core/pda) for more details.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Which wallets are supported?">
  Squads supports Phantom, Backpack, Solflare, and other Solana wallets. Hardware wallets like Ledger are supported. Ledger cannot sign messages, so when the app asks you to sign in, select **Using a Ledger / Trezor?** to sign a transaction instead. The connect dialog also lists WalletConnect (Ledger Live and mobile wallets) and Trezor. [See compatible wallets](/resources/multisig-best-practices#compatible-wallets).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Can I use Squads on mobile?">
  Yes. Access Squads through your phone's browser or the in-app browser of mobile wallets like Phantom, Backpack, or Solflare. Navigate to [app.squads.so](https://app.squads.so/) and connect your wallet.
