Adding tokens, minting, freezing and thawing accounts, updating metadata, and burning authorities require a Squads Pro plan. Transferring a token’s mint or freeze authority to another address is available on every plan.
How the Token Manager works
The Token Manager supports the full lifecycle of SPL tokens: creation, minting, metadata updates, authority transfers, account freezing, and authority burning. Each action generates a transaction that requires Squad approval before execution. Each token in the Token Manager displays its name, symbol, supply, and value. Each token row has four icon buttons (mint, thaw account, freeze account, update metadata) and a more actions (…) menu with two groups:- Transfer: Transfer Mint authority or Freeze authority to another address
- Burn: Permanently burn Mint authority or Freeze authority
Create a token
When you create a token through the Token Manager, the mint authority, freeze authority, and update authority are all set to your Squad’s vault address (labeled Squads Vault in Settings) by default. This means all token operations are protected by your multisig threshold from the start.1
Open the Token Manager
Navigate to the Token Manager page under the Developers section.
2
Start token creation
Select Add token, then select Create token.
3
Select the token program
Under Token program, select Token Program (standard SPL program) or Token Extensions (Token-2022, supports extensions like transfer hooks and confidential transfers).
4
Enter token details
Fill in the token details:
- Token image (PNG, JPEG or GIF)
- Token name
- Token symbol (up to 10 characters)
- Token description (optional)
- Token decimals (0-12). This determines the decimal precision and the maximum mintable amount for the token
5
Create the transaction
Select Create to generate a transaction for approval.
6
Execute
Your token is created once the transaction is executed. It then appears in your Token Manager list.
Mint tokens
- Find the token in your Token Manager list
- Select the mint button on the token’s row
- Enter the amount to mint, add a note (optional), and select Initiate
- Minted tokens appear in your vault after execution
Update token metadata
- Select the update metadata button on the token’s row
- Edit the fields you want to change: token name, symbol, image, description, metadata URI, or update authority. You can also turn on Make metadata immutable
- Add a note (optional) and select Initiate to generate a transaction for approval
Transfer token authority to your Squad
If you have an existing token and want to manage it through your Squad:1
Open the Token Manager
Navigate to the Token Manager page.
2
Select transfer
Select Add token, then select Transfer token authority to your Squad.
3
Check the token's authority
Your vault must already hold mint or freeze authority over the token. If it doesn’t, have the current token authority transfer it to your Squad’s vault address (labeled Squads Vault in Settings) first.
4
Add the token
Enter the Token mint address and select Add token. The token appears in your Token Manager list.
Transfer authorities from your Squad
To transfer mint or freeze authority to an external address:- Find the token in your Token Manager list
- Open the more actions (…) menu and, under Transfer, select Mint authority or Freeze authority
- Enter the New authority address, add a note (optional), and select Initiate
- The authority transfers upon execution
Freeze and unfreeze accounts
Freezing an account halts all transfers of a token on a specific address. Your Squad must hold the freeze authority for the token. To freeze an account:- Select the freeze account button on the token’s row
- Enter the Token account address and select Initiate
- The account remains frozen until you thaw it
- Select the thaw account button on the token’s row
- Enter the Token account address and select Initiate
Burn authorities
Burning an authority permanently removes it. This is irreversible. To burn mint authority:- Open the more actions (…) menu and, under Burn, select Mint authority
- Review the warning and select Burn Authority to initiate the transaction
- Once executed, no new tokens can ever be minted
- Open the more actions (…) menu and, under Burn, select Freeze authority
- Review the warning and select Burn Authority to initiate the transaction
- Once executed, no accounts can be frozen or unfrozen for this token
Burn tokens
To burn token supply, navigate to Treasury and use the burn function on the token you want to destroy. This is separate from burning authorities.Best practices
- Test on devnet first. Create and test your token on devnet before deploying to mainnet.
- Think carefully before burning authorities. Burning mint or freeze authority is permanent and cannot be reversed. Only burn when you are certain the authority will never be needed.
- Keep metadata consistent. Document your token’s name, symbol, and description, and keep them aligned across all platforms where the token is listed.
- Verify authority addresses. When transferring authority, double-check the destination address. A wrong address means losing control of that authority.
