Permissions control what actions each member can take in your Squad. Assign specific permissions to create checks and balances within your organization.
Choosing and editing permissions is available on the Pro plan.

Permission types

Members can have any combination of three permissions: On a Basic plan, new members receive all three permissions. On a Pro plan, you choose the permissions when adding the member, and at least one is required. When creating a Squad, you can choose the permissions of the initial members on any plan.

Update permissions

1

Select the member

Navigate to Members in the sidebar and select the Edit member icon on the member’s row.
2

Change permissions

Update their permissions as needed. If the change leaves fewer voting members than the current threshold, set a New threshold in the same transaction.
3

Create the transaction

Select Initiate. The changes take effect once the transaction is approved and executed.
Updating member permissions invalidates all Active transactions. They show as Cancelled and can no longer be approved. Ready transactions in the Vault tab can still be executed. Ready transactions in the Config tab cannot. Complete pending transactions before making changes.

Recovery keys

Add an extra member with Voter-only permission as a backup key. This member cannot propose or execute transactions but can provide a critical approval vote if your team loses access to a key. For example, in a 3-of-4 Squad, if two keys are lost, a recovery key holder (a trusted friend, lawyer, family member, or professional recovery service) can act as the third vote to restore access. Contact support@sqds.io for information about professional backup providers.

Best practices

  • Start minimal. Grant only the permissions each member needs for their role.
  • Separate duties. Use different permission combinations to create checks and balances (e.g. one member proposes, others vote and execute).
  • Maintain coverage. Keep multiple members with Executor permission to prevent bottlenecks, and enough Voters to meet your threshold.
  • Review regularly. Audit permissions periodically to match current team responsibilities.
What permissions do new members get by default? On a Basic plan, all three: Proposer, Voter, and Executor. On a Pro plan, you choose permissions when adding the member and can update them afterward. How are permissions different from the threshold?Permissions control what actions a member can take. The threshold controls how many Voter approvals are needed before a transaction can be executed. What happens if no member has Executor permission?Approved transactions cannot be executed. Always maintain at least one member with Executor permission.
